Content Summary: Sports Illustrated covers both amateur and professional sports of all types. This is a magazine where elite men and women from soccer, football, golf, volleyball and many more sports are featured. The magazine gives play analysis and projections for future success, along with scores and statistics.
Critical Analysis: The writing and interviews are accessible and appealing. One objection I have is the annual Swimsuit Edition, but it is the bestselling issue, so I have no argument against capitalism. The fact that the magazine covers athletes from such a diverse group of people and sports is amazing. This is a multicultural magazine and gives attention to both female and male athletes. It appears to have a more diverse group of subjects than other magazines published.
Genre: Popular Magazine
Curriculum Ties: N/A
Reading Level/Interest Age: 6th Grade/All Ages
Challenge Issues: I foresee challenges based solely on the swimsuit issue. The library policy has been crafted to label this issue and categorize it for the adult section. While this choice diverges from our efforts not to censor library materials, it is supported by current library policy and I retain that policy on file for any patrons with questions.
Why Included: Sports Illustrated is a popular magazine with boys and girls, men and women. It has a high circulation rate in our public library, proving its value to the library collection.
