Critical Evaluation:
Seventeen has been a popular magazine for teen girls for several decades. The current articles target an effort for body positive perspectives and good self esteem, but the models are still overwhelmingly thin and photoshopped to have perfect skin and no visible flaws. The most popular issue is the Prom Issue. This highlights looking a certain trendy way for a formal dance. The writing level of the magazine is acceptable, but the subject matter remains a little questionable.
Genre: Popular Magazine
Curriculum Ties: N/A
Reading Level/Interest Age: 5TH grade/14-19 years
Challenge Issues: Forseeable challenges would involve the content of the magazines. I would have the library's selection procedures on file and allow patrons to see our criteria for choosing the magazines we subscribe to. I would allow them to examine the files and provide them with the form for formal challenging of materials, as well as showing our circulation statistics, showing the popularity of the materials.
Why Included: Seventeen is very popular in our public library's teen section among our female patrons. Because of the circulation numbers and the attention it receives, both positive and negative, it is a magazine we examine regularly in our budget review.
