The first line of defense for challenges to library materials is for our public service employees to be knowledgeable of the library's selection procedures, the materials we own, and critical statements about materials.

When a patron approaches staff with a challenge. Staff is instructed to provide the selection criteria folder that is available at all public desks in the library.

After explaining the selection process and showing patrons criteria, staff is also provided with a folder of critiques on frequently questioned material.

The third step is for the staff to politely provide the form that patrons can use to formally challenge materials we have already acquired.

If a formal challenge is filed, the library will quickly convene their challenge advisory board to review the challenge and a public statement will be made about their resolution.
